What Did NFL Decision-Makers Say About Giants' Jones?

    By Anthony Licciardi,

The New York Giants have a quarterback problem .

While the Giants hope quarterback Daniel Jones can return to 2022 form – a distinct possibility with upgrades up front and out wide – the much likelier outcome is that he ends up looking much like he has for the rest of his career. Such a season would likely end his New York tenure.

But Jones has his fans, and some believe the average quarterback that took the Giants to the playoffs could make himself known again. In The Athletic’s survey of NFL coaches and executives , Jones ranked as a Tier 3 quarterback a year ago – a starter who can win with adequate help. Where does he find himself entering 2024?

Jones finds himself headlined Tier 4 ahead of his sixth season, defined as a veteran who ideally wouldn’t start 17 games or otherwise unproven. He’s ranked as the 23rd among 30 non-rookies in the survey.

“He’s not bad,” one former head coach said. “I don’t know how much he is going to run after knee and neck injuries, but it’s his ability to run that gives him some life. The throwing is just average.”

If Jones isn’t the dual-threat option he’s showcased in recent years, New York is in trouble. His legs were an avenue to explosive plays that his arms couldn’t consistently create, and he has a knack for finding lanes while seemingly slipping past the defense’s consciousness.

With Devin Singletary replacing Saquon Barkley in the backfield, compensating with more explosive plays elsewhere is all the more important.

“You go out to the gun range, you shoot a gun, you feel real comfortable hitting the target,” a defensive coach said. “But when people are shooting back, he is not as accurate. When the s— gets moving and it’s live football, I think that is what gets him — missing throws, making more mistakes.”

Jones shares a tier with Justin Fields, Gardner Minshew, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, Bryce Young, Sam Darnold, and Jacoby Brissett. Needless to say, he’ll need to improve his standing if he hopes to stick around the Big Apple much longer.
