The Auburn Tigers begin their 2024 football season against Alabama A&M.

This will be the first opportunity for Hugh Freeze and the Tigers to display improvement after last season’s 7-6 season. There’s anticipation about quarterback Payton Thorne taking a step forward, with a revamped wide receiver corps, to create a far better passing attack. The defense should look different with several new faces as well.

While returning talents like defensive end Keldric Faulk and cornerback Kayin Lee are prime defensive performers, look for more overall competition with new players.

Defensive tackles Philip Blidi, Isaiah Raikes, and Gage Keys will help a defensive front that’s now more athletic, experienced, and bigger, plus it possesses more depth than the 2023 unit.

Auburn’s four freshmen receivers are all expected to play Saturday. It’s a group entirely from Alabama prep football programs and each is a heavily recruited player.

While Cam Coleman certainly deserves to be watched closely and is expected to start, Bryce Cain, Malcolm Simmons, and Perry Thompson will be new Tigers to watch as well. Any one of them is capable of creating the best catch from a pass from Thorne.

Alabama A&M Player To Watch

Running back Donovan Eaglin is a bull in a china shop. The 5-foot-11 and 226-pound bruiser is A&M’s best returning running back and could end up in the NFL. His 2023 statistics include 142 carries, 765 yards, a 5.4 average, and 7 touchdowns. Eaglin’s final performance of 2023 against Mississippi Valley State also includes 27 carries, 207 yards, a 7.7 average, and 2 touchdowns.
