Boston Red Sox to Activate Rich Hill

The Boston Red Sox (67-64) are spiraling. Having lost four in a row and six of their last 10, they are searching for anything they can do to stop the bleeding and remain in contention for the playoffs.

Per Robert Murray of FanSided , the Red Sox are set to call up veteran Rich Hill on Tuesday.

Hill, 44, will be in his fourth stint with the Red Sox, his hometown team, and in his 20th Major League season. His previous stints with the Red Sox took place from 2010-2012, and then in one-year stints in 2015 and 2022.

Hill has played for 13 teams over his career but has spent the most time with Boston. As a member of the Red Sox, Hill carries a 3.31 ERA across 185 innings in 70 games with 181 strikeouts and a 129 ERA+.

For his career as a whole, Hill holds a 4.01 ERA across 1,405 1/3 innings in 382 games with 1,423 strikeouts and a 107 ERA+.

Hill is expected to perform as a long reliever with the Red Sox going forward. His two hitless innings for the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox are a promising sign that the veteran lefty can be a viable option out of the pen down the stretch.

2023 saw Hill as a starter for the Pittsburgh Pirates (62-69) and the San Diego Padres (75-68), making 27 starts. He would struggle in that role, however, carrying a 5.57 ERA across 135 2/3 innings, and would transition to the bullpen late in the season. Hill made five relief appearances for the Padres and held a 3.38 ERA across 10 2/3 innings.

It is unclear at this time what the corresponding move will be to make room for Hill on the 26-man roster.
