Former Gopher Casey O’Brien battling cancer for 8th time

Former Minnesota Gopher and St. Paul native Casey O’Brien is again battling cancer and needs your help.

O’Brien posted on social media Monday that cancer recently returning in his lung, liver and lower back, and traditional treatment options have been exhausted.

Because of that, O’Brien said he’s trying newer treatment methods, but his insurance won’t cover them, leaving him in need of financial help.

In less than 17 hours, more than $150,000 had been raised to help him.

O’Brien was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer, when he was 13. Over the past decade, he’s beaten not only that but seven relapses.

Along the way, he chased his college football dreams, getting into two games for the Gophers as a holder on point-after attempts and serving as an inspiration to so many others. He was recognized with the Disney Spirit Award in 2019 and used his platform to try to inspire and help others battling cancer.

Unfortunately, his own battle continues, although he’s remained optimistic.

“Our spirits are high as we head into these new opportunities, and my family and I would truly appreciate any help we can get,” his GoFundMe says.

It goes on to add, “I look forward to being a success story soon!”
