Latest Big 12 Expansion Update Reveals How Close UConn Is To Joining
By Kevin Matthew Borba,
According to a report by CBS Sports ' Dennis Dodd, the Big 12 had a meeting on Monday to discuss the possibility of adding basketball powerhouse UConn.
In short, the programs around the country weren't all on the same page, which means that this discussion is far from over. As reported by Dodd, UConn would need 12 of 16 members to vote "yes" in order for them to join the conference. The report revealed that the Huskies currently have six votes that would be in their favor, two that wouldn't be and the other eight were unconfirmed.
So, if three more of those eight schools end up being a "no," the Huskies would not get in.
On the bright side for UConn, Dodd was told that the conference is not "remotely close" to a final decision being made on the move.
As it does in every conference realignment move, a media outlet is a major factor in allowing or disallowing the move. Dodd revealed that the Big 12 and the Big East's television partner, Fox, is not in favor of the move. It not only takes away the biggest brand from their two-month-old contract with the Big East, but it would also force the Big 12 to make some major adjustments to their contract as well.
If they were to join the Big 12, they'd do so in every single sport but football in 2026. Their football program, which hasn't surpassed six wins since 2010 when the Big East was still a thing in football, would have to meet "financial benchmarks" before being able to join.
There is a long way to go before this is all said and done, but Yormark is clearly looking to get creative in order to help the Big 12 keep up with the rest of the Power 4.
The Big 12 will have four programs making their debut/return to the conference this season, as they added Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah from the Pac-12.
