Report: Oilers Working On Trade for Right-Hand Defenseman

After receiving a handful of bad news related to the departure of two players via offer sheets and trades , the Edmonton Oilers could be on the verge of making a positive addition to their roster ahead of the upcoming season.

According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli (h/t Brenden Scott) , the Oilers have a trade in place that could bring a new right-handed defenseman to their roster.

Seravalli shared this information during an appearance on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer on August 26 , where he hinted at the possibility of Edmonton finalizing a trade before training camp begins.

"There are other things Edmonton is looking at, including a potential trade, that could shake things up a little bit more than just the PTO route," Seravalli said. "It wouldn't have to wait until training camp."

The report comes after the team traded Cody Ceci and a third-round pick to the San Jose Sharks for Ty Emberson while losing Philip Broberg to the St. Louis Blues.

Emberson, acquired in the Ceci trade, has not yet developed to the level of a top-tier defenseman, making the potential addition of another right-handed blueliner all the more crucial.

While the details of the trade, including the identity of the incoming player and his team, remain unclear, Seravalli's comments suggest that the Oilers are actively pursuing additional defensive options beyond a simple veteran addition on a tryout contract.

The Oilers came close to pulling off a miracle by reaching Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final last season but ultimately failed to beat the Florida Panthers.
