Two Former San Antonio Spurs Sharpshooters Remain Unsigned

The San Antonio Spurs filled their last roster spot this offseason and are unlikely to add any more free agents before the NBA season tips off. This summer, the Spurs addressed their playmaking needs by drafting Stephon Castle and signing Chris Paul and added shooting by trading for Harrison Barnes and drafting Harrison Ingram.

Of course, all of those additions meant some players had to be on the outs, and sharpshooting forward Cedi Osman was not re-signed by the team and is yet to find a new landing spot. The same can be said for former Spur Doug McDermott, who was traded to the Indiana Pacers in February.

Last season, the Spurs took the 11th most three-point attempts but were 27th in the league with a 34.7 percent from deep. McDermott (43.9 percent) and Osman (38.9 percent) were two of the more reliable shooters on the team, but neither of them will be making a return.

As role players like Isaiah Hartenstein, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Tobias Harris sign mammoth contracts, other high-end pieces like Tyus Jones and Gary Trent Jr. have had to sign for much less. As the season gets closer and closer and teams have less money to work with, it looks like Osman and McDermott will fall into the second camp.

Fortunately for both of them, there are still teams with roster spots. The Phoenix Suns waived Nassir Little and EJ Liddell and could sign either of the shooters to a deal, and the Sacramento Kings will be looking for floor-spacers to surround their new trio of DeMar DeRozan, De'Aaron Fox, and Domantas Sabonis.

While neither Osman or McDermott are high-level defenders, they are both established bench pieces who provide offensive boosts and efficient shooting. Neither one of them is likely to have last season be their last appearance in the NBA.
