It's the tale tell sign of a quality football program. Success on the field leads to opportunities for assistant coaches who are largely behind the scenes from the national spotlight.

Nick Saban's Alabama was the best example. The record of success helped produce a coaching tree that extends throughout the country. The group is headlined by Kirby Smart, who has led the Georgia Bulldogs two national championships in eight seasons.

Smart has produces his fair share of head coaches, too. Dan Lanning, Mel Tucker, Fran Brown, Sam Pittman – it's only a matter of time before programs come to Georgia in search of coaching talent.

Co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann has flirted with the idea of taking the next step elsewhere in the past. Schumann, 34, came to UGA with Smart from Alabama in 2016. Starting as inside linebackers coach, Schumann expanded his role to coordinator in 2019.

After leading one of the best defenses in college football history in 2021, and coaching a second Butkus Award winner in Nakobe Dean, Schumann's name received an uptick in college and NFL coaching circles.

The Bulldogs followed that national title season up with a second consecutive championship. UGA finished fifth in total defense that season, and the Philadelphia Eagles were looking for their defensive coordinator. Schumann interviewed for the role and was ultimately passed over.

It was unclear just how seriously the Eagles were considering Schumann, who had never coached at the pro level. According to On3's Pete Nakos, Schumann was indeed a serious candidate for the position .

There will be similar positions open following the 2024 season, whether on the collegiate or pro level. Georgia fans can expect Schumann's name to to be mentioned when the time comes.

Schumann and company are certainly not focuses on that, however, with the season opener just days away. The No. 1 Bulldogs will take on No. 14 Clemson in Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Aug. 31 at noon ET (ABC).
