General manager Joe Douglas and the New York Jets were busy Wednesday morning following their official cutdown to the active roster.

While New York did not have any of their former players claimed off waivers, the Jets did claim one player from an opposing team: tight end Brenden Bates formerly of the Chicago Bears.

Bates recorded six catches for 100 yards during the preseason and is an undrafted free-agent rookie out of Kentucky. The preseason numbers were good for third in receptions and second in yards throughout the Bears' preseason group.

At 6-5 and 255 pounds, Bates made a name for himself with the Wildcats as a ferocious blocker and quality catcher of the football.

New York placed Kenny Yeboah on injured reserve as part of their move to cut the roster down to 53 on Tuesday and only had Jeremy Ruckert and Tyler Conklin on the roster at the tight end position.

Bates is expected to be the third tight end on the roster for New York potentially on gameday and add an additional blocker to the offense in worse-case scenarios.

Many fans had wondered what would happen to the third tight role on the Jets offense this season and Douglas has answered that question quickly after getting the roster down to 53.

He'll have to make a corresponding roster move as well to make room for Bates.
