It was only a matter of time. Rhett Lowder is about to make his MLB debut.

This season has not gone to plan for the Cincinnati Reds. Now at the end of August, the team is looking at an IL 16 players long with most effectively shut down for the year. The rotation has been hit especially hard with four starters from this season shut down plus Brandon Williamson who has yet to pitch in Cincinnati this year.

Now, it seems a little help is on the way. Lowder is going to make his debut in the evening game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, August 30.

When he makes his debut, it will mark his third promotion in 2024 alone. He's on a Cincinnati Reds prospect speedrun.

He started out his 2024 in High-A Dayton where he made five starts and logged a 2.49 ERA with 29 strikeouts and a 0.947 WHIP.

Then, toward the beginning of May, Lowder was promoted to Double-A Chattanooga. It took him a little while to get acclimated to the new level of competition. In his first 11 games, Lowder had a 6.52 ERA and a 1.572 WHIP. Then, he turned it on. In his final five starts, Lowder owned a 0.62 ERA and a 0.759 WHIP.

Only a couple of weeks ago, he got the call that he was being promoted to Triple-A Louisville. He made one start on August 22 and went six innings and allowed three hits and no walks for no runs. Loweder struck out seven in his only outing.

Now that the season is all but lost for the Cincinnati Reds, Lowder is able to make a few starts down the stretch to get him a good look at MLB hitters. Regardless of whether the plan is just to have him make one start and then send him back down or if he will man the rotation for the remainder of the season, the expectation should be that Lowder competes for a rotation spot in next year's Spring Training.
