The New England Patriots have made it through cutdown day with not a ton of huge surprises in terms of players released.

With that being said, while arguably the biggest name the team chose to part ways with was not necessarily a surprise, he is someone who made a large impact during his time in New England. Over his two seasons in a Patriots uniform, Bailey Zappe started eight games at quarterback and won four of them, going .500 during a 2-year period where the team overall was well below that mark.

The 2023 season confirmed what many already knew in that Zappe was never going to be the franchise quarterback, and once Joe Milton III was drafted , the writing felt on the wall for Zappe. Nonetheless, he stepped into a situation that was far from ideal for a young quarterback and did everything the team asked him to do over two tumultuous seasons in Foxboro. Head coach Jerod Mayo praised Zappe's professionalism when he was asked about the decision to release him.

"One thing I'll say about Zappe, look, he has been the ultimate professional," Mayo said , eventually adding that he felt better about the other three quarterbacks in the room. "Even before I took this role, we've had a good relationship, and I'm always going to root for a guy like Zappe. He always had a great attitude, even though things weren't probably ideal for him personally. In saying that, we think that these three quarterbacks have a chance to be better than what Zappe displayed."

Zappe signed with Kansas City to join their practice squad after the release. It's safe to say that no matter where he ends up, New England fans will always watch his career closely.
