WNBA Star Sabrina Ionescu Makes Liberty History Against Sparks

Sabrina Ionescu has become a cornerstone of the New York Liberty since being drafted as the first overall pick in 2020.

Ionescu has firmly established herself as one of the premier guards in the WNBA. Her ability to command the floor and deadly accuracy from beyond the arc have made the Liberty even more formidable.

On Wednesday, Ionescu reached another feat in their game against the Los Angeles Sparks. In the second quarter, she passed Vickie Johnson for the second-most assists in Liberty history with her 788th career dime.

The 26-year-old Ionescu issued a nifty bounce pass in traffic to a cutting Kennedy Burke to grab the milestone.

At the rate she's going, Ionescu is on pace to eclipse the all-time Liberty record of 1,306 assists held by legendary guard Teresa Weatherspoon. As of writing, she is fifth in the league in assists with 5.9 per game.

Ionescu has benefited from having several teammates who could score at ease, including Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, Courtney Vandersloot and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton. But of course, they've also benefited from Ionescu's unselfishness and court vision.

The achievement is the latest for the three-time All-Star, who recently won a gold medal with Team USA in the Paris Olympics.

Prior to their game against the Sparks, Ionescu was also averaging 19.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals.

The Liberty are coming off a win over the Phoenix Mercury.
