The Cincinnati Bengals Know the Quarterback They'll Face in Week 1

In the Zac Taylor era, the Cincinnati Bengals have not been great against rookie quarterbacks. With the loss to the Houston Texans last year, Taylor fell to 3-5 against first-year quarterbacks.

There was a thought the Bengals would face a rookie in Week 1 against the New England Patriots. Drake Maye was the third-overall pick in this year's draft and is expected to be the Patriots' franchise quarterback.

However, he won't be the guy in Week 1 at the very least as new head coach Jerod Mayo announced veteran Jacoby Brissett will get the start.

Brissett was a third-round pick of the Patriots in 2016 and started two games on the eventual Super Bowl champions. In September of 2017, the Patriots traded Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts. He was with the Colts from 2017 through 2020 and signed a free-agent deal with the Miami Dolphins for the 2021 season. In 2022, he signed with the Cleveland Browns and was a Washington Commander in 2023.

In his career, Brissett has passed for 10,574 yards and 51 touchdowns. He has 48 starts under his belt and was the primary starter for the Colts in 2017 and 2019 and filled in for the Dolphins in 2021. In 2022, he made 11 starts for the Browns as well.

Brissett has been a serviceable backup/bridge quarterback for most of his career and it looks like he's going to be the same for Maye in New England.

It'll be his fourth appearance against the Bengals. In that first season in Indianapolis, Brissett started against the Bengals and went 25/39 for 233 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Cincinnati won, 24-23.

His second appearance was another start, this time with the Browns in 2022. He helped beat the Bengals 32-13 behind a 17/22, 278-yard, one-touchdown effort. He appeared for one snap later on in that year and tossed an incomplete pass.

The Bengals are looking to get back to the playoffs and the Brissett-led Patriots are the first in line. After a down year, Lou Anarumo's defense will look to get off to a strong start.
