The quarterback situation for the Minnesota Vikings has been interesting to watch this preseason, to say the least.

While first-round rookie J.J. McCarthy unfortunately suffered a season-ending knee injury early on, the Vikings had to turn to backup Sam Darnold to take the reigns, and he is expected to be the starter one the season gets underway next week.

Behind him, though, everything remains a bit unclear as the backup QB situation continues to evolve.

On Thursday, some shocking news was reported about that backup situation in Minnesota, with ESPN's Kevin Seifert announcing that the Vikings were parting ways with former BYU Cougars star Jaren Hall.

To replace Hall, the Vikings are signing free agent QB Brett Rypien, who was most recently cut by the Chicago Bears this preseason despite his impressive Hall of Fame Game performance with 166 yards passing and three touchdowns.

While Rypien might have had a great early showing in the preseason, Hall has been very solid for the Vikings leading up to the 2024 campaign. In three preseason games, he completed 28-of-46 passes for 339 yards, 4 touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He was in a great position to get the QB3 job behind Darnold and Nick Mullens while McCarthy went on the injured reserve for the season.

But ultimately, Minnesota decided to go a different way. It seems incredibly likely that Hall will find a spot with another team this preseason and can go into the 2024 season on a roster somewhere in the league.
