ESPN's Greg McElroy welcomed back one of the best segments of his show "Always College Football" on Thursday, revealing three major upsets he can envision in Week 1 of the season.

He spoke at length about the Penn State at West Virginia game earlier on in his show, getting way into the weeds on Drew Allar's percentile splits as a passer. Anyway, he likes the opportunity the Mountaineers have in their own backyard this weekend.

"If West Virginia can run the football with that experienced offensive line and their three-headed monster rushing attack, this could be a very difficult game for the Nittany Lions," McElroy commented of the matchup.

He also noted that WVU returns its triumvirate of leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. This is a veteran group coming off a strong season with a home game against a top-10-ranked rival to open the year. Morgantown will be a blast noontime Saturday.

"Wyoming against Arizona State, be careful," McElroy suggested next. "Wyoming is not a team you want to mess around with. We saw Wyoming go toe-to-toe last year with Texas."

That's right, the Longhorns and Cowboys were dead-locked in a 10-10 duel heading into the fourth quarter. But it was Texas who drew first and final in the fourth quarter, adding three touchdowns to put the win to bed. Clearly, though, Wyoming is no cupcake.

"Finally, Vanderbilt against Virginia Tech," said McElroy. "I think Virginia Tech will win the game but there's a lot of hype around Virginia Tech this year, a lot a hype."

Meanwhile, Vandy's improved in McElroy's estimation.

"Nobody's talking about some of the upgrades that Vanderbilt has made on both sides of the ball," he added. "Clark Lea has done a pretty good job in talent acquisition this offseason. Maybe they can make life difficult against a team that has super high expectations and a ton of pressure riding on this season."

There you have it: West Virginia, Wyoming and Vanderbilt are the contenders to pull off a shocker this weekend.
