Should Jets Trade Allen Lazard to Cowboys?

Despite making the New York Jets' 53-man roster, wide receiver Allen Lazard could still find himself as a trade candidate. ESPN's Bill Barnwell recently highlighted Lazard as a veteran player who might be on the move, with the Dallas Cowboys seen as a logical destination.

Lazard, set to earn $10 million this season, joins a deep receiver room that includes Garrett Wilson, Mike Williams, Malachi Corley, Xavier Gipson, and second-year players Jason Brownlee and Irvin Charles. After a challenging 2023 season, where he posted just 23 receptions for 311 yards and a single touchdown, Lazard’s role in the Jets' offense may be limited.

Barnwell argues that trading Lazard could provide the Jets with financial flexibility.

"If the Jets can convince another team to eat even $3 million of this deal, that's cash they could use for a more valuable addition at the trade deadline," Barnwell suggested.

The Cowboys, in need of experienced depth at receiver, seem like a natural fit. However, a move before Week 1 seems unlikely.

The Cowboys are currently managing their cap space carefully, having recently extended wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and still needing to address quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract situation. Prescott is in the final year of his deal, and Dallas has yet to sign him to a new contract, which complicates any potential trades that would add significant salary.

While the Cowboys may not engage in a trade right away, there remains a slim chance they could revisit the idea later in the season if their depth becomes an issue. For now, Lazard remains a Jet, gearing up for their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers on September 9. As the season progresses, the Jets will likely evaluate their roster and cap space, keeping all options on the table.
