What's Curry $62M Contract Extension Mean for Warriors Future?

    By Lance Roberson,

Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. is working to recover from Klay Thompson's departure via free agency. Although stars weren't signed or traded for during the summer, the Warriors acquired role players relating to some of what Thompson offered throughout his 13-year tenure.

And ... The Warriors just signed Stephen Curry to a contract extension as the cherry on top of an OK-tasting sundae.

    Curry signed a one-year, $62 million deal.

    Why only a one-year deal?

Per the current CBA rules, the "Over 38" rule prevents teams from offering contracts of four years or more to players who are or will be 38 years old during that deal.

Although the discourse surrounding Curry's recent comments about not wanting to play on mediocre rosters or his Team USA kinship with LeBron James, the one-year deal is out of necessity, not a ploy to leave the Warriors.

Curry spoke of his focus for his NBA career regarding where he calls home.

"I've always said I want to be a Warrior for life," Curry said in July. "At this stage in my career, I feel like that's possible."

The Warriors missed out on trading for Utah Jazz All-Star Lauri Markannen. However, reading the tea leaves, it seems they refused to deal with Brandin Podziemski, as recent reports indicate he's the guard for the future.

If Dunleavy plays the franchise's cards correctly, the Warriors have enough assets in multiple first-round picks to trade and large contracts to match for an All-Star.

Although Curry signed on the dotted line, the Warriors will unlikely ease their trade market activity during the season.
