Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott made headlines on Thursday by revealing that the words of Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones no longer carry much weight with him.

Prescott shared his thoughts on Jones' comments and how they no longer influence his mindset.

“I stopped, honestly, listening to things (Jerry Jones) says to the media a long time ago,” Prescott admitted. “It doesn’t really hold weight with me.”

This remark comes after a press conference on Wednesday, Aug. 28, where Jones was asked about his expectations for Prescott in the upcoming season. Instead of giving a direct answer, Jones offered praise but avoided specifics.

“I’m such a fan of Dak," Jones said. "And I appreciate all of the great things that we all know are there.”

When the topic of Prescott’s contract status was brought up, Jones remained unphased, stating that he doesn’t stress over whether or not a player is under contract.

Prescott’s current deal with the Cowboys is set to expire soon, and speculation has been rampant that the quarterback could be seeking a new contract worth up to $60 million per year.

“I quit a long time ago getting bent out of shape about having anybody under contract or not,” Jones said. “There are all kinds of things other than a contract that could change the outcome of him being under contract: injury, level of play.”

Prescott’s response indicates that he isn’t concerned with Jones’ comments and might be open to exploring the open market.

If Prescott remains healthy and continues to perform at a high level, he’s poised to receive a substantial payday next offseason—whether with the Cowboys or another team.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport weighed in on Prescott’s contract situation.

“Dak Prescott has as much contract leverage as you can literally ever have," Rapoport stated. "He cannot be franchise tagged, he cannot be traded, and he’s almost certainly going to be the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL if he gets a deal.”

As the 2024 season approaches, Prescott’s future with the Cowboys remains one of the most intriguing storylines to watch.
