NFL Insider Shares What It Will Take for New England Patriots Rookie to See Field

The New England Patriots made the decision that veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett will begin the season as the starting quarterback rather than highly touted rookie Drake Maye .

While it's a decision that brings less excitement at the beginning of the year for Patriots fans, it ultimately will likely be to the benefit of Maye as the team's offensive line looked like a mess in the preseason.

The plan for New England seems to be to play Brissett until the unit can improve and be able to support a rookie quarterback, at least in the eyes of some. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said that improvement along the offensive line as the unit gels together is something that could get Maye on the field sooner rather than later.

"The Patriots do have talent on the offensive line, they do have young players who are probably gonna step in there and start, they have some highly paid players," Rapoport said . "With offensive line it's really a matter of how quickly can they gel, how quickly can they learn each other...it just takes time and I think that's why starting Jacoby Brissett right now makes sense. One of the hardest things for any rookie quarterback is to know that he has to get rid of the ball right now . Brissett has done it, he's done it for 10 years, there are times when he's gonna know 'I gotta unload or I'm gonna get hit.' This will keep Drake Maye out of harms way while the offensive line solidifies and basically fixes itself."

Monitoring what the Pats offensive line looks like early will be something fans are all over.
