New York lost in cruel fashion last night, but they bounced back and had an impressive win.

David Peterson continued to excel. Peterson has been the surprise of the Mets season and he has become one of the Mets most trusted players. The 2017 first round draft pick has finally put it together in his fifth major league season.

Peterson pitched seven strong innings today. He now is on a streak of three games where he has pitched at least seven. Once again, he wasn’t striking batters out. He was pitching to contact and inducing ground ball outs. His only blemish came from a two run home run from Randal Grichuk.

Peterson was put into a jam in the seventh. An infield hit with an error made it first and third with only one out. He bared down and induced a double play, keeping the game tied. It was another very impressive start as he lowered his ERA to 2.83.

Peterson capped off his great month of August. In the month, he had a 1.86 ERA in 38.2 innings. The Mets also won the last five games he started. On the year the Mets are 13-3 when Peterson starts.

The lineup did just enough today. New York opened the scoring with a towering shot to dead center by Pete Alonso. Alonso’s 29th of the year gave him sole possession of third place all time on the Mets home run leader board.

The Mets continued to get runners on, but were not able to add on. Then, their leader did what he has done all year. Francisco Lindor worked a great at bat. Lindor continued to fall off and waste pitches he did not want to hit. On the eleventh pitch of the at bat, Lindor saw a hittable changeup and jumped on it. The shortstop smacked it way over the right field fence and tied the game.

The game remained tied until the ninth. New York could not find the clutch hit. They were 0-7 with Runners in scoring position. Then, Jesse Winker hit a one out double. With two outs, Jose Iglesias continued to come up big for the Mets. Iglesias smacked a single and gave New York the lead in the ninth.

Edwin Diaz came out for the save after blowing one yesterday. Diaz was a totally different pitcher today. Diaz attacked the zone with his fastball. He trusted his fastball and leaned on it, only throwing his slider once. The closer got the first two hitters to strike out before getting a popout to secure the victory.

It was a very impressive bounce back outing just the day after a terrible performance.

New York now play the White Sox and need to take care of business and gain ground in the Wild Card race.
