Romanian Gymnast Reinforces Judges' Error at Olympics, Calls for Medal Win

Had it not been for an unfavorable turn of events, Romanian gymnast Sabrina Voinea would have been the rightful winner of the bronze medal in the floor exercise final of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Unfortunately for her, this is not the case after her Romanian teammate Ana Barbosu was deemed the third-place finisher in the competition. This decision came after American Jordan Chiles was stripped of the bronze medal in question.

Chiles successfully appealed her score during the competition, which moved her up to third above Barbosu and Voinea, who both finished with a score of 13.700. It was later determined, however, that Chiles' score challenge came in late, which ultimately led to her score being brought back down to 13.600 (she fell to fifth).

Barbosu was then named the rightful third-pace winner due to a tie-breaker (higher execution score) that put her above Voinea.

The controversy does not end there. Voinea has also filed an official appeal questioning the judges' decision to penalize her during her routine. Her camp is adamant that Voinea committed no violations and is demanding that the 0.100 points deducted from her score be reinstated.

Should this appeal come to fruition, Voinea will move up to third with a score of 13.800.

On Thursday, Voinea herself reiterated her strong stance on this controversy. She shared an Instagram post that was critical of the judges and their supposed scoring gaffe.

"The network showed a replay immediately after her floor exercise," read the post that Voinea shared. "It was clear, she did not step out of bounds and therefore should not have received a 0.1 deduction. Simple. After all other petitions she would win the Bronze medal.

"Tragic. Simple solutions. We have the technology to make the right call."

Voinea did not need to add any caption to the post. It is abundantly clear that she believes she deserves a medal from the competition, and it appears that her camp will continue to fight for the justice they feel they are due.

So let me get this straight… they stripe Chile’s from the bronze for an untimely judge reconsideration by a second at the games but a month after the Olympics the Romanians want to challenge a call? WTH?
