DTR Wins QB3, Browns' Kevin Stefanski Reveals How

The Cleveland Browns had a hot competition for the third quarterback spot. With Deshaun Watson penciled in as the starter and veteran Jameis Winston his backup, the fight for QB3 took over training camp.

Veteran quarterback Tyler Huntley and second-year man Dorian Thompson-Robinson both shined in the preseason. At the end of the day, though, the Browns were shopping Huntley, and ultimately released him when no trade partner could be found.

On Thursday, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski was asked about the competition and how it came down to a win by DTR.

“It’s such a competitive roster in general, but that room was very, very competitive, and those guys all had really good moments,” Stefanski explained. “Dorian coming off of his injury, to be able to put himself in position to go play like he did in the games, perform like he did in practice, I think was a big part of it.”

DTR is also a "homegrown'' product as the Browns took him in the fifth round of last year’s draft. In a sense, they know him a lot better than they know Huntley and when it came down to the choice between a guy they drafted and a free agent they signed, Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry stuck with the guy they selected.

DTR finished the preseason completing 38-of-55 passes (69.1 percent) for 375 yards with a touchdown and an interception. ... all enough to justify eeping the former UCLA Bruin as the third-string guy.
