College Football Team Sets off Fireworks Despite Stumbling in Opener

Thursday was a great night for college football, with some big games lighting up the scoreboard across the country.

But amid the excitement, one moment in particular during the Minnesota game had fans doing a double-take—though not for the right reasons.

In case you missed it, the Minnesota Gophers faced off against North Carolina at home, and things were tight. With the Gophers down 19-17 and just seconds left on the clock, kicker Dragan Kesich had a chance to seal the win with a 47-yard field goal.

Unfortunately for Minnesota Golden Gophers head football coach P.J. Fleck, the kick sailed wide right, sending fans home disappointed in Week 1.

But that’s not where the story ends.

Despite the miss, the fireworks crew at Huntington Bank Stadium hit the launch button anyway, setting off a celebratory display that left everyone confused and frustrated. Some rival fanbases even found it poetic.

Whether it was a case of bad timing, a miscommunication, or just a simple mistake, it was a tough moment for Minnesota, who is now the first team to have outright possession of 18th place in the Big Ten standings.

The Gophers were looking to redeem themselves after last year’s 31-13 loss to UNC, but instead, they ended up with an embarrassing post-game spectacle that has everyone talking.

You might've thought Minnesota football had pulled off the win if you were outside the stadium when the fireworks went off. Unfortunately for Gophers fans, that wasn’t the case.
