Will Browns' Deshaun Watson 'Make It Through the Season as a Starter'?

As the Cleveland Browns gear up for the season, much of their fate will rest on the shoulders of quarterback Deshaun Watson . After managing to win 11 games last year with Watson only appearing in six contests, repeating such success seems uncertain, especially in the fiercely competitive AFC North.

Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright has voiced doubts about Watson’s ability to remain the Browns' starting quarterback throughout the season.

“Deshaun still isn’t healthy, and they kept four quarterbacks,” Wright said on First Things First . “I don’t think Deshaun makes it through the season as a starter.”

Wright's comments underline the scrutiny surrounding Cleveland's decision to trade for Watson in 2022 and sign him to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract.

“At some point, they have to admit that's the worst trade and worst contract in NFL history. It is a sunk cost; you have to try to pull yourself out," Wright added.

Since joining the Browns, Watson has played in just 12 games, throwing for 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Wright also predicted that the Browns would finish third in the AFC North, suggesting that Jameis Winston’s presence on the roster is “for a reason.”

Although Watson, a three-time Pro Bowler, has the potential for a comeback, his last full season came in 2020, when he led the NFL in passing yards. With lingering health concerns and inconsistent play, questions remain about whether he can return to his previous form.

As Cleveland heads into the season, Watson's performance will be crucial. His ability to regain his standing as a top quarterback could determine if the Browns compete for the division or face another disappointing season.
