Josh Allen and Sean McDermott continue to be recognized as one of the NFL's premier quarterback-coach duos, ranking fourth on CBS Sports' 2024 list. While their consistent success with the Buffalo Bills is unquestionable, Allen's turnovers remain a hot topic in league discussions.

CBS Sports' Jeff Kerr placed Allen and McDermott just behind Patrick Mahomes-Andy Reid, Lamar Jackson-John Harbaugh, and Brock Purdy-Kyle Shanahan. Over their six seasons together, Allen and McDermott have elevated the Bills to perennial playoff contenders. Yet, the conversation around Allen's performance often centers on his turnovers, a point of contention among players and executives alike.

NFL players recently voiced mixed opinions about Allen in ESPN’s annual quarterback rankings. Labeling him as the most “ overrated player," criticizing his tendency to force throws into tight coverage and lock onto targets. However, many supporters defend Allen’s aggressive style, noting his willingness to take risks in key moments, similar to the approach of legendary gunslinger Brett Favre.

Allen has accumulated the most total touchdowns in the league over the past four seasons, with 173 scores, but he also leads in turnovers. His turnover rate of 2.8% is the second-highest among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 dropbacks during this period, trailing only Joe Burrow (2.2%) and Patrick Mahomes (1.9%). His turnovers have cost the Bills an estimated 300 points in Expected Points Added (EPA) over the last four years, highlighting both his high-risk style and its consequences.

Despite the debate, Allen’s production remains in good shape. He ranks second in passing yards (17,540) over the past four seasons and led the NFL in total yards (4,830) and touchdowns (44) in 2023. His playoff performance is equally remarkable, with 27 touchdowns to six turnovers, and he holds the record for the most total touchdowns after his first six seasons (221).

Under McDermott's leadership, the Bills have won four consecutive AFC East titles and achieved five straight 10-win seasons, becoming a consistent playoff presence. However, their struggles against Kansas City and Cincinnati in the postseason remain a hurdle to clear.

As the Bills prepare for the season, Allen's ability to manage turnovers while maintaining his dynamic style of play will be crucial. If Allen can refine his decision-making, he and McDermott may finally break through to a Super Bowl and silence their critics.
