In the past few days, the Carolina Panthers, under the guidance of GM Dan Morgan, have been highly active in reshaping their roster, focusing on adding depth and enhancing the overall strength of their team. These moves have seen the introduction of new faces to both the main roster and the practice squad, reflecting the team's strategy to ensure flexibility and preparedness as the regular season approaches.

Wednesday: A Wave of Waiver Claims

The Panthers took full advantage of their position on the waiver wire, securing six players who had been recently let go by other teams. This series of moves underscored the team's commitment to reinforcing key areas, particularly in the secondary and linebacker positions. The additions included:

    1. Jarrett Kingston (OL) – Formerly with the 49ers, Kingston brings versatility with experience playing both guard and tackle during his college career at Southern Cal.

    2. Shemar Bartholomew (CB) – An undrafted rookie from Georgia Southern, Bartholomew had previously caught the eye of the Panthers during a joint workout.

    3. Keenan Isaac (CB) – With brief experience from his time with the Buccaneers, Isaac is seen as a promising special teams contributor with potential for growth.

    4. Tariq Castro-Fields (CB) – A sixth-round pick out of Penn State, Castro-Fields had some game time with the Commanders, adding depth and competition in the cornerback room.

    5. Jamie Sheriff (LB) – Sheriff, who impressed in preseason games with the Seahawks by recording three sacks, adds a dynamic pass-rushing element to the Panthers' defense.

    6. Jon Rhattigan (LB) – An experienced player from the Seahawks, Rhattigan's familiarity with special teams and defensive schemes makes him a valuable addition.

Adjusting the Roster: Departures and Openings

To accommodate these new arrivals, the Panthers had to make difficult decisions, releasing six players from the initial 53-man roster. Notably, wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette, known for his skills as a return specialist, was among those waived. Joining him were guard Cade Mays, cornerback D'Shawn Jamison, defensive tackle Jayden Peevy, wide receiver Jalen Coker, and safety Demani Richardson. These moves reflect the team's ongoing evaluation process to ensure the best fit and depth across all positions.

Thursday: Rounding Out the Practice Squad

The Panthers continued their roster adjustments by finalizing their practice squad. By Thursday afternoon, they added four more players, ensuring they reached the maximum allowed 16-man squad. The additions included:

    1. Jayden Peevy (DT) – A familiar face from training camp, Peevy offers size and potential in the defensive interior.

    2. Jalen Coker (WR) – Coker's return to the practice squad gives the Panthers a reliable option with knowledge of the team's offensive schemes.

    3. Demani Richardson (S) – Another returning player, Richardson, provides depth and developmental potential in the safety position.

    4. Ja'Tyre Carter (OL) – Having experience with the Bears, Carter joins the practice squad to offer additional coverage on the offensive line.

The practice squad is complete for now. With these moves, the Panthers have positioned themselves with a blend of experience and potential, ready to adjust as the season unfolds. Their focus on fortifying both the active roster and practice squad highlights their strategic approach to improving the roster throughout the NFL season.

    Friday: More Moves to Make

Carolina is seemingly never done making moves. On Friday the team added former Indianapolis Colt and Clemson Tiger WR Deon Cain and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer OL Brandon Walton. To make room for these two players, Carolina released S Alex Cook, OL Mason Brooks, and DT Walter Palmore. These moves leave one spot open on the practice squad.

Here is the 2024 practice squad as it stands now.
