Valtteri Bottas is facing stiff competition for the final Formula 1 seat at Audi, as his future with the team remains uncertain.

The Finnish driver is seeking a contract extension with Sauber, but recent changes within the organization have complicated matters.

Audi has appointed Mattia Binotto to oversee Sauber's transition into the Audi Works team by 2026. This follows the departure of Sauber CEO Andreas Seidl and former chairman Oliver Hoffmann amid an internal power struggle.

Binotto now holds the roles of Chief Technical Officer and CEO, while Jonathan Wheatley from Red Bull is expected to take over as team principal in mid-2025.

This new management structure suggests potential shifts within the team, including new driver signings for the upcoming season.

Recently, Audi secured Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg for next season, but Bottas's situation is less clear.

The team is reportedly considering pairing a young driver with an experienced one like Hulkenberg, which puts Bottas at a disadvantage.

F2 driver Gabriel Bortoleto is emerging as a strong candidate for the seat, alongside Robert Shwartzman, who recently tested with Sauber.

Bottas is pushing for a multi-year contract to ensure stability in his career, rather than a one-year deal that would leave him vulnerable to being replaced.

He has been in discussions with Binotto, and while progress has been made, no decisions are expected during the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

As the situation unfolds, Bottas remains focused on racing while navigating the complexities of contract negotiations and team dynamics.

Speaking to the media at Monza, he said:

“I'm only interested in multi-year contract, because for me, doing just one year, I know that still next year probably won't be easy for my career.

“That's not that interesting. So, for me, the main thing is to be part of a clear project and to have a clear plan for the years ahead. That's I think, at my stage of my career, I think that's important.”

    He also said:

“We continued the discussions this week, I was at the factory on Tuesday, and we’re making progress.

“But now we're here [at Monza] to race, we're not gonna sign contracts here. We're here to race and focus on bouncing back off the difficult weekend, and then there's always next week.”
