The New York Giants have made a key roster adjustment ahead of the regular season, elevating tight end/fullback Jakob Johnson to their 53-man roster . Johnson, initially placed on the practice squad after final cutdown day, was promoted following the placement of backup offensive lineman Austin Schlottmann on injured reserve.

Head coach Brian Daboll announced the move, highlighting the importance of Johnson's versatility and experience in the Giants' offensive schemes. Johnson, a former Tennessee Vols standout, brings valuable experience from his previous stints with the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders.

Johnson's elevation is not only a testament to his hard work but also his familiarity with key members of the Giants’ coaching staff. Giants offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo, who worked with Johnson during his time with both the Patriots and Raiders, played a role in this decision. Johnson spent three seasons (2019-2022) with the Patriots, where he saw action in 37 games and made 20 starts. His time in New England set the foundation for his NFL career, paving the way for two subsequent seasons with the Raiders.

Signed by the Giants on August 17, Johnson was brought in to bolster the team's depth at tight end/fullback following the waiver/injury designation of tight end Tyree Jackson. His promotion to the active roster marks a quick turnaround for the veteran player, who has appeared in 67 NFL games with 34 starts over five seasons.

Johnson's familiarity with the Giants’ offensive schemes and personnel, including offensive linemen Jermaine Eluemunor and Greg Van Roten , adds a layer of continuity to his transition. As the Giants prepare for the regular season, Johnson’s ability to contribute both as a blocker and a receiving option will be closely watched by the coaching staff.

The Giants’ decision to elevate Johnson underscores the team's focus on maintaining roster flexibility and depth, especially in key offensive positions. As Johnson takes his place on the active roster, the team hopes his experience and versatility will provide valuable support throughout the season.
