The sports world is reeling from an unimaginable tragedy. Late Thursday night, Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother were killed in a horrific accident when a car crashed into their bicycles on a rural road. Gaudreau, only 31 years old, was a rising star whose light has been abruptly dimmed.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman released a poignant statement in response to the loss.

“The National Hockey League family is shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew,” Bettman said.

“While Johnny's infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname 'Johnny Hockey,' he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path.”

The impact of Gaudreau's death is profound, reaching beyond the ice and touching the hearts of many. Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James shared his grief on social media :

“Insane man! I instantly got so down and sad after reading the story. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Gaudreau family! May Johnny and Matthew fly high, guide/guard and bless their family/s from the heavens above.”

Reports indicate that Gaudreau and his brother were preparing to celebrate their sister's wedding when the tragedy occurred. The Columbus Blue Jackets also expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt statement .

“The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy,” the team said.

“Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more significantly a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Meredith, his children, Noa and Johnny, his parents, their family and friends on the sudden loss of Johnny and Matthew."

"Johnny played the game with great joy, which was felt by everyone that saw him on the ice. He brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played, from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets.”

The accident , which occurred around 8:30 p.m. in Oldmans Township, not far from the Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey borders, was caused by a 43-year-old man from Woodstown, N.J., who has been charged with two counts of death.

Gaudreau, who signed a seven-year, $68.25 million contract with the Blue Jackets two years ago, was a fourth-round draft pick of the Calgary Flames and quickly became one of the NHL’s standout players. His loss leaves a void in the hockey community and beyond.

Our thoughts are with Gaudreau’s family, friends, and everyone who was touched by his presence both on and off the ice.
