Ranking quarterbacks in the NFC South for the season is no easy task, with each player bringing unique strengths and challenges to their respective teams.

As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gear up for their season opener against the Washington Commanders , Baker Mayfield is ranked as the top quarterback in the division, looking to build on his recent success.

    1. Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield enters the 2024 season as the leading quarterback in the NFC South. Coming off a career year with 4,044 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, Mayfield led the Buccaneers to a 9-8 record and an NFC South title. His performance earned him a three-year, $100 million contract extension, solidifying his role as the franchise quarterback.

With a strong supporting cast, including Mike Evans, Chris Godwin , and a solid ground game led by Rachaad White , Mayfield aims to continue his upward trajectory. The Buccaneers boast veteran experience and depth across key positions, giving them a clear edge.

    2. Kirk Cousins, Atlanta Falcons

Kirk Cousins takes the second spot, largely due to uncertainty surrounding his return from an Achilles tear suffered in Week 8 of the 2023 season. Signed by the Falcons in the offseason, Cousins brings his experience and play-action expertise to an offense loaded with young talent, including Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts.

While Cousins has a track record of consistently delivering 4,000-plus passing yards and 25-plus touchdowns when healthy, his ranking reflects the unknown of how well he will perform for an entire NFL game or season following his significant injury. His ability to regain form will be critical to Atlanta's playoff hopes.

    3. Derek Carr, New Orleans Saints

Derek Carr ranks third in the NFC South heading into 2024. Known for his experience and ability to manage games, Carr aims to guide the Saints to contention in a division where nine wins might be enough to secure the title.

With Chris Olave as his primary target, Carr needs to elevate his performance, especially with limited depth in the receiving corps. The Saints will rely on Carr to push closer to 30 touchdown passes to stay competitive in the division.

    4. Bryce Young, Carolina Panthers

Bryce Young rounds out the NFC South quarterback rankings for 2024, facing immense pressure to improve after a difficult rookie season. The Panthers have bolstered their receiving corps with Diontae Johnson and rookie Xavier Legette, but Young’s development under a new coaching staff will be crucial.

His ability to make quicker decisions and adapt to NFL speed will determine whether Carolina can make a significant leap this season.

As the Buccaneers prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Commanders, Baker Mayfield’s leadership and recent success position Tampa Bay as a strong contender in the NFC South. With a clear advantage over a Washington team led by rookie quarterback Jaden Daniels, the Buccaneers are poised to start the season on a positive note.

Their battle in the trenches against a formidable Commanders defense, particularly how they manage veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner, will be a critical aspect to watch.
