Formula 1 is considering a new format that would introduce a sprint race specifically for rookie drivers.

This initiative aims to give young talent a chance to compete in a less pressured environment, potentially following the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix tire test.

George Russell , a driver for Mercedes and director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, has expressed support for the idea to Motorsport.com .

He believes that rookie drivers often face significant challenges during their first practice sessions, especially if they lack prior experience. The proposed sprint race would allow them to gain valuable experience in a more structured setting.

“I actually quite like the idea, to be honest.

“I always have mixed feelings about the FP1 sessions for rookies [each team must set aside two such practice sessions each year for young drivers to take part in their two cars].

“Because, unless you've had a lot of experience doing F1 tests, it’s very, very challenging. I remember my first FP1 I did with Force India in Sao Paolo [in 2017].

“I'd only done two days of F1 testing prior to that, I'd never been to Sao Paolo and it really felt that I was thrown in that deep end and there was a lot of scrutiny on those two laps, three laps you get on a brand new set of tyres.

“But an opportunity for rookie drivers to do a full day of testing, then straight into a sprint race weekend. I think it's a good idea.”

However, reigning world champion Max Verstappen has raised concerns about the timing of such an event. He suggests that adding another race shortly after the season finale may not be appealing to everyone involved.

The F1 Commission is set to review this proposal by the end of September, as it seeks to create more opportunities for emerging drivers to showcase their skills.

While the idea has garnered interest from various stakeholders, logistical challenges remain, particularly regarding its integration into the 2024 schedule.

As the Italian Grand Prix weekend unfolds, teams and fans are already focused on the upcoming races, with practice sessions and qualifying taking center stage before the main event at the iconic Monza circuit.
