Giants' Malik Nabers: No. 1 on Jersey; Bullseye on Back?

What's next for the New York Giants: Daniel Jones petitioning Eli Manning to wear No. 10, or perhaps begging the family of Y.A. Tittle to dig No. 14 out of the moth balls? Maybe Eric Gray should ask for Frank Gifford's No. 16. Or maybe new pass-rusher Lawrence Taylor would look good in No. 56, right Lawrence Taylor?

Malik Nabers wearing No. 1 - Ray Flaherty's No. 1 - is a cool story to some. But to us, it's an affront to history and a slippery slope of what's-mine-is-mine-and-what's-yours-is-mine-also. Especially in the Giants' 100th anniversary season.

We know, we know. The rookie receiver went through the proper channels, first asking Giants owner John Mara about wearing the number. Mara, in turn, went to Flaherty's family and permission - and three weeks of grinding on a decision - was granted.

But just like that, 1935 has been gobbled by 2024.

Maybe it's a good thing, come to think of it. Instead of just a name in a dusty history book, Flaherty's career is now resurfacing thanks to Nabers wearing his number.

But Flaherty's No. 1 was the first retired jersey in the history of pro football. If it isn't an eternally protected species, what's next?

A New England Patriots' quarterback wearing No. 12? A Dallas Cowboys' running back dusting off No. 22? The Jets issuing No. 12 to some bum, maybe even Aaron Rodgers?

Nabers wore No. 8 at LSU. He wore No. 9 through training camp and preseason. But now he's No. 1. What, he couldn't work out a deal to buy No. 9 from kicker Graham Gano?

Chosen sixth overall by a team who last season had one of the worst offenses in the NFL, the kid already faced a lot of pressure. Now he also has to live up to one of the oldest, best legacies in the history of the NFL.

No. 1 on jersey. A bullseye on his back?
