Fans are hopeful for a significant turnaround after a rough 2023-24 campaign that saw the Memphis Grizzlies finish with a disappointing 27-55 record. With stars like Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr. returning to total health, the team is poised to reclaim its place among the Western Conference's elite. Adding to the excitement is the arrival of promising young talents like GG Jackson and Vince Williams Jr., who are expected to make a meaningful impact following their impressive seasons.

However, despite the optimism surrounding the team, questions remain—particularly concerning the center position. Steven Adams's departure last February left a void in the lineup that the Grizzlies hope to fill with rookie Zach Edey. But is Edey ready for the challenge?

Can Zach Edey handle the pressure?

Zach Edey is selected ninth overall in this year's NBA Draft and has high expectations. Purdue's 7-foot-4, 300-pound center was a dominant force in college, earning two straight AP Player of the Year awards. His debut in the Summer League only fueled the hype, where he posted an impressive 14 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocks against the Utah Jazz.

Despite this promising start, concerns remain about Edey's ability to transition to the NBA. His Summer League stint was cut short after just two games due to an ankle injury, leaving many to wonder if he can endure the rigors of an entire NBA season. Bleacher Report's Grant Hughes recently raised questions about Edey's "possible fitness as a first-unit 5," citing worries about his health and whether he can keep up with the speed and space of the professional game.

While the potential upside of Edey manning the center position is undeniable, it's clear that his ability to handle the responsibilities of being a starting center from day one is far from certain. The Grizzlies may need to consider adding a veteran presence to the roster as a safety net, either to mentor Edey or to step in if he struggles early on.

Should the Grizzlies consider a veteran backup?

Even if Edey shows signs of being ready to step up, having an experienced big man on the roster could be invaluable for the Grizzlies. A veteran could provide much-needed stability and guidance as Edey adjusts to the demands of the NBA. As Hughes suggested, it might be wise for the Grizzlies to go "bargain shopping for a vet" to ensure depth at the center position.

With training camp around the corner, Memphis must address these lingering uncertainties. While the team's core is poised for a strong comeback, the success of their season could hinge on how well they manage the center position—starting with Zach Edey's development and the potential addition of a seasoned backup.
