It’s been a crazy year for former Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

The speedster starred on the field for the Longhorns in 2023 with 75 catches for 1,014 receiving yards, which both led the team to go along with five touchdowns.

He was a key part of Texas’ first conference championship-winning team in 14 years and its first College Football Playoff berth in school history. Now, the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver is a part of the history of his hometown of Fresno, California, where August 29 is now known as Xavier Worthy Day.

Worthy's mother, Nicky Jones, attended the ceremony on her son’s behalf and wanted to underscore how both parents and kids can be inspired by her son’s success.

“I was a young mother when I had Xavier and had lots of odds stacked against me,” Jones said. “And so to be standing here today receiving this honor just really means a lot. And I hope that it's a double-edged sword, inspiring, not only the youth no matter where you’re from, you can do great things. It doesn’t have to be football. You can be a doctor, you can be amazing things. And also just parents, just continuing to support your children, because their dreams are reachable, seriously.”

Following his three standout seasons on The Forty Acres and breaking the NFL combine record for the fastest 40-yard dash time, Worthy was selected 28th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Chiefs, the two-time defending Super Bowl champions.

Worthy will look to have as immediate of an impact in the NFL as he did at Texas during his freshman season, when he set numerous freshman school records including receiving yards in a season with 981 yards and receiving touchdowns in a season with 12. With Worthy’s game-breaking speed and legendary Patrick Mahomes throwing to him, a rookie of the year campaign is certainly possible.

Worthy and the Chiefs will open up the NFL season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5, with kickoff scheduled for 7:20 p.m. CT.
