The Memphis Grizzlies made a significant roster move this offseason by trading former lottery pick Zaire Williams to the Brooklyn Nets. In return, the Grizzlies received the draft rights to Nemanja Dangubic and fourth-year big man Mamadi Diakite. While this trade initially seemed to be a straightforward salary dump to ease the Grizzlies’ luxury tax concerns, the decision to release Diakite has added a layer of complexity to Memphis’ offseason maneuvers.

The Complicated Decision to Release Mamadi Diakite

When the Grizzlies opted to part ways with Diakite, it seemed like a routine roster cut to trim costs. After all, his $2.27 million salary, while not exorbitant, came with a partially guaranteed $1.39 million, which Memphis will still need to account for on their books. This move leaves the Grizzlies with just 13 full-time players, one short of the NBA’s minimum roster requirement.

While releasing Diakite may have freed up a roster spot, it didn’t entirely alleviate the financial burden. The Grizzlies are still on the hook for his guaranteed salary, and any subsequent signing to fill that vacant spot will push them even closer to the dreaded luxury tax threshold, which sits at $170.81 million for the upcoming season.

Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors noted that the Grizzlies could theoretically stretch Diakite’s guaranteed payments over several years, lessening the immediate impact on their cap space. However, this approach would still leave Memphis with some financial commitments and a roster spot that needs filling. Given the Grizzlies’ current payroll, any new signing could push them over the tax line—a situation they’ve been trying to avoid.

Potential Replacements for Diakite on the Roster

With Diakite gone, the Grizzlies must now look to add another player to meet the league’s minimum roster requirements. While options are slim this late in the offseason, a few names stand out as potential fits for Memphis.

    Tristan Thompson

At 33 years old, Tristan Thompson brings a wealth of experience and playoff savvy, having been a critical contributor to the Cleveland Cavaliers during their 2016 championship run. While his athleticism has declined, Thompson still offers valuable skills like setting screens, grabbing offensive rebounds, and providing veteran leadership. His ability to contribute in limited minutes could make him an affordable and effective option for the Grizzlies.

    Bismack Biyombo

Another potential target is Bismack Biyombo, a big man known for his rebounding and shot-blocking abilities. Biyombo briefly played for the Grizzlies last season, making 27 starts and averaging 5.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. His familiarity with the team’s system and defensive prowess make him a viable candidate to fill the void left by Diakite’s departure.

    Scotty Pippen Jr.

Though already on a two-way contract with the Grizzlies, Scotty Pippen Jr. could be promoted to a full-time roster spot. Pippen impressed during his 21 games with Memphis last season, averaging 12.9 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game. He continued to shine in Summer League play, posting 21.5 points and 8.7 assists per game, leading the Grizzlies to the championship round. Given his playmaking abilities and potential, Pippen could be a valuable addition to the main roster, providing depth behind Ja Morant.

The decision to release Mamadi Diakite was more complex than it may have initially appeared, with financial and roster implications that the Grizzlies must now navigate carefully. As Memphis looks to fill the void left by Diakite, veterans like Tristan Thompson and Bismack Biyombo offer experienced options. At the same time, Scotty Pippen Jr. presents a promising internal candidate. Whoever the Grizzlies choose, it will be a crucial move as they aim to bounce back from a challenging 2023-24 season and re-establish themselves as a force in the Western Conference.
