On Wednesday, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen publicly expressed his confidence in the team’s secondary , especially at its second boundary corner spot, where preseason struggles clouded the group’s optimism.

Two days later, he welcomed former Giants corner Adoree’ Jackson into the building for a physical and the start of contract negotiations. By day's end, he was back wearing blue.

According to Ian Rapoport , the team signed Jackson to a one-year deal on Friday. The value of the contract is not yet public.

The move comes after Cor’Dale Flott and Nick McCloud struggled to close out the summer with an iron grip on the starting job. Flott was the initial favorite for the job after moving back from the slot, where he played poorly in 2023. McCloud was serviceable depth last season, but was unimpressive in lone preseason outing against the Houston Texans.

Jackson spent the last three seasons in New York , logging two interceptions (one pick-six), 23 passes defended, and 176 tackles.

However, last season was a struggle for Jackson, who posted the worst coverage metrics of his career (tied for eighth-most yards allowed, third-worst coverage grade per Pro Football Focus ).

Whether it’s a true athletic decline or a matter of being taking on too large of a responsibility in Wink Martindale’s defense is yet to be seen, but defensive coordinator Shane Bowen’s scheme is friendlier to cornerbacks and may be conducive to more ball production, too.

Bowen was the outside linebackers coach for much of Jackson’s tenure with the Tennessee Titans, so there may be a level of comfort there, too.

Jackson will immediately compete for a spot in the starting lineup. At the very least, he can provide valuable leadership to one of the league’s youngest (and least experienced) secondaries, and the ability to return punts.

He’ll have his first test in Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings.
