Huskers volleyball sweeps Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in home-opener

The Nebraska volleyball team opened its home slate with a dominant sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Nebraska jumped out to a 10-0 lead in Set 1 and never looked back, beating the Islanders 25-9, 25-20, 25-15 in front of 8,956 fans.

In Tuesday’s season-opening win over No. 9 Kentucky, the Huskers block showed up big — their 18 was Nebraska’s most in a match since 2018. On Friday, the Huskers didn’t need the block.

Despite tallying only seven blocks all night, they still held the Islanders to a .181 hitting percentage. Only two Islanders hit above .250 in the match. Comparatively, the Big Red hit .427 for the match and every Husker who had at least two attacks except for Merritt Beason hit well over .300.

Lindsay Krause led the way for the Huskers with a match-high 13 kills on 23 attacks. Andi Jackson added seven kills on 10 swings while Rebekah Allick and Beason each had six kills.

Krause said after the match that the team was focused on “staying disciplined and doing us well," which they clearly managed to do all night.

Bergen Reilly led Nebraska with 10 digs while Lexi Rodriguez added nine. Reilly also totaled a match-high 36 assists and five service aces — all in the first set. Everyone else in the match combined only had four aces.

“My team was doing a really good job of putting me in good positions out there and we had a really great scouting report so I knew exactly where to go on blocks, so that helped, too,” Reilly said afterward.

The Huskers also noted how great it was to play again in front of their home crowd. Head coach John Cook said you "could feel the buzz in the arena" and may have contributed to the Islanders' slow start.

“It was so great. … Getting to be back in here, it’s just something unlike anywhere else and we know that, so it was just super great to be back," Krause said.

The Huskers will wrap up the Ameritas Players Challenge vs. TCU on Saturday. TCU is coming off a four-set win over Oklahoma earlier Friday. Saturday’s match is set to start at 7:30 p.m. back at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
