Samuel Aldegheri faced a challenging start to his Major League Baseball career during his debut for the Los Angeles Angels against the Seattle Mariners.

The 22-year-old left-hander, who made history as the first Italian-born-and-raised player to pitch in the majors, struggled on the mound, allowing seven runs—though only two were earned—over five innings.

Aldegheri's debut began with promise, as he warmed up to the iconic "Eye of the Tiger." However, things quickly went south.

He gave up five unearned runs in the first inning, contributing to a 7-4 deficit for the Angels after five frames. He surrendered seven hits, including a two-run homer to Julio Rodriguez in the fourth inning, along with two walks and three strikeouts.

"I had a hard time in the first inning, but I thought I bounced back pretty good," Aldegheri said . "I'm happy. First time I was kind of nervous, but I'm happy."

Said manager Ron Washington : "After that first inning he came back and got us through five. He made some adjustments, but early in the game he was trying to shoot strikes in there and they were jumping all over the fastball."

Before joining the Angels, Aldegheri was part of a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he had a mixed performance in the minor leagues, posting a 5.19 ERA in Double-A Rocket City.

His journey began in Italy, where he played for Parmaclima Baseball Club before being signed by the Phillies in 2019.

Aldegheri's debut is significant not just for him but also for Italian baseball, as it highlights the growing presence of Italian players in the sport. The Angels are hopeful that with time and experience, Aldegheri can develop into a reliable pitcher.
