As if last season's injury woes weren't enough, the Memphis Grizzlies have been hit with more bad news before the new season. On August 27, the Grizzlies announced via their X profile that GG Jackson sustained an injury that will require surgery.

" While playing basketball outside of Dallas on August 27, after attempting a contested layup, Jackson II experienced an unstable landing on his right foot. Subsequent imaging revealed a broken fifth metatarsal in his right foot, which will require surgery to repair ," the team's PR team wrote. They also added that the surgery is scheduled for September 4 and that more information will be provided following the procedure.

This is a major setback for the Grizzlies, who had hoped for a fresh start after a season plagued by injuries. The loss of Jackson, a promising young talent, particularly frustrates the team and fans.

A familiar injury with a tricky recovery

The broken fifth metatarsal is not a career-ending injury, but it has a reputation for recurring. Many players who have suffered this type of fracture, known as a Jones fracture, have experienced multiple breaks. One such example is CJ McCollum, who dealt with two fractures in the same year. The Grizzlies must be cautious with Jackson's recovery, knowing the injury could resurface.

Jackson was heading into his second NBA season, following a strong finish last year and impressive performances in summer leagues. Fans hoped he would secure a spot in the starting lineup or be the first pick off the bench. However, this injury likely means Jackson will be sidelined for at least a month or two. The exact recovery time will become more apparent after his surgery in September.

    Grizzlies facing early challenges

This injury is a significant blow to the Grizzlies, who already dealt with the aftershocks of a problematic previous season. Jackson's absence will be felt, especially given the potential he showed as a rising star in the lineup. The team, already under pressure to bounce back, now faces the additional challenge of managing another injury before the season starts.

As we await further updates post-surgery, one thing is clear: the Grizzlies' journey to redemption became much more challenging.
