The college football season is officially underway and there are several strong candidates to potentially win the Heisman Trophy. On Saturday morning, former college football legends, Matt Leinart and Brady Quinn, made their picks for the coveted award.
During a segment on Big Noon Kickoff on Fox, Leinart and Quinn discussed the Heisman race early in the season. Both of them chose quarterbacks playing in the SEC .
Leinart chose Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback, Jalen Milroe while Quinn picked Georgia Bulldogs quarterback, Carson Beck. The former USC quarterback likes Milroe's dual-threat ability and Quinn likes the improvement Beck made in the second half of last season.
Milroe is a solid pick considering he's the driving force for Alabama. Last season, Milroe led the Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoff after upsetting Georgia in the SEC Championship. Milroe finished last season with 2,834 passing yards, 531 rushing yards, 35 total touchdowns, and threw a 65.8 completion percentage.
As for Beck, the Bulldogs quarterback proved to be a reliable option under center. He did have a rocky start to the season a year ago. However, he turned around nicely despite Georgia missing out on the postseason. Beck finished with 3,941 passing yards, 28 total touchdowns, and threw a 72.4 completion percentage.
Leinart is well-known in the college football world after winning a Heisman in 2004 playing for the USC Trojans. He's highly regarded as one of the best quarterbacks to play at the college level. During his Heisman-winning season, Leinart recorded 3,322 passing yards, 36 total touchdowns, and threw a 65.3 completion percentage.
Quinn never won the Heisman Trophy but he was a final candidate, finishing third in the Heisman race in 2006. Playing for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Quinn is recognized as one of the best quarterbacks in the program's history. He recorded 3,426 passing yards, 39 total touchdowns, and threw a 61.9 completion percentage in the 2006 season. Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback, Troy Smith, won the Heisman that year.
With that said it'll be interesting to see if Milroe or Beck can prove one of Leinart and Quinn right. Both Alabama and Georgia look like true contenders. The Crimson Tide are under a new regime with Kalen DeBoer as head coach. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have arguably the best head coach in the nation in Kirby Smart.
Alabama kicks off its season on Saturday, August 31 against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Meanwhile, Georgia starts its season in a tough matchup against the Clemson Tigers.
