Iowa Opens 2024 Season In The Funniest Way Possible

The more things change, the more they stay the same? Iowa is hoping that's not the case in 2024 with their offense, but the first drive of the season against Illinois State looked just like old times.

Iowa fans and college football aficionados will remember the bizarre dynamic at offensive coordinator for Iowa a year ago. Bryan Ferentz, son of head coach Kirk Ferentz, had to score 25 points a game to keep his job and didn't really come close, leading to a change in leadership for the unit.

With Cade McNamara back and fully healthy, plus a new OC, hopes were high for improvement. But through one drive, Iowa looked just like they always have, gaining four yards on three plays before a 35-yard punt to end their first possession of the season.

A three-yard run and then a one-yard run to set up the incomplete pass on third down. That's so Iowa. The second drive of their season was slightly better, one yard, in fact, as they gained five yards before punting.

But on lucky No. 3, Iowa finally produced some points. The Hawkeye defense was about 95% responsible for the score, forcing a fumble in enemy territory to take over. After another three and out, this time Iowa just happened to be close enough to kick the field goal, which they did and made.
