James Franklin Facing Intense Backlash For Early Week 1 Decision

Penn State struck first Saturday afternoon against West Virginia, as Drew Allar shook off some early struggles to find Harrison Wallace III striding down the middle of the field for a 50-yard touchdown.

However, the good times didn't last as the euphoria of a 50-yard score immediately wore off for Penn State fans when head coach James Franklin opted to try a two-point conversion after the score rather than just kicking the extra point.

You can guess what happened. PSU failed the conversion to stay at just a 6-0 advantage, which lit a fire under Nittany Lion fans' seats. Many took to X to unleash their anger at the longtime head coach.

He was, in fact, serious. And he only angered fans further by going for a fourth down and four on West Virginia's own 27 yard-line. He caught flak for not taking the points there as well, but luckily, Allar completed a pass to get the first and save Franklin from a full onslaught from his own fans.

Just when everything was looking great....

Penn State ultimately scored a touchdown on the drive where they went for it on fourth down, validating Franklin's decision there. However, Penn State fans don't seem to love the extremely aggressive decision-making on the offensive side of the ball so far.

PSU grabbed the early 13-0 advantage in a game that's already featured FIVE live fumbles. They could be going for the all-time record at ten, but either way, the Nittany Lion defense has come to play.
