NCAA Blocks Creative College Football NIL Strategy

Oklahoma State made headlines ahead of the college football season for its innovative NIL strategy involving QR Codes on helmets. The plan was to allow players opportunities to earn money directly from fans watching games from home.

    Not soo fast.

The NCAA has reportedly blocked the strategy instituted by Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy, citing that the QR Codes are impermissible as "advertising" or "commercial marks."

Oklahoma State issued a statement on the NCAA's decision. The university does not agree with the blocking of its NIL strategy.

"We disagree with the interpretation of the rule but will abide by it and work with the appropriate groups to lead on the needed change," OSU athletic director Chad Weiberg said. "Our people came up with an innovative concept to raise the NIL value of our student-athletes, but ultimately, it just serves as the latest example of how college sports are evolving at a faster pace than the rule book."

Oklahoma State is not completely scrapping the idea, though. The program has removed the QR Codes from helmets, per the NCAA's wishes. But the codes will be included in spots throughout Boone Pickens Stadium, on the video board, the equipment truck and on player bags.

The Cowboys will open the 2024 season versus South Dakota State at 2 p.m. ET (ESPN+).
