To open the 2024 college football season, Dabo Swinney and the No. 14 Clemson Tigers traveled to Atlanta to face the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Swinney and the Tigers are coming off their worst season since 2010, finishing the 2023 season with a 9-4 record. With some starters returning, including quarterback Cade Klubnik, Clemson hopes to get back on track this year.

However, their hopes of pulling off a huge upset in the opening game have quickly diminished, trailing by four possessions in the fourth quarter.

Late in the third quarter, with 1:07 left, Clemson found themselves down 20-3 and in desperate need of a score. After failing to convert a 3rd-and-1 on their own 34-yard line, Swinney elected to punt the ball on 4th-and-1 instead of going for it.

In Dabo's defense, Clemson was not in great field possession to go for it, especially with their offense stagnant throughout the game. But they needed a score of any kind. Instead, Georgia increased their lead a few minutes later, ultimately sealing the game.

College football fans did not like Swinney's decision to punt the ball at this point in the game and took to social media to dub him a coward.

"Dabo punting there was a coward move."

"Dabo is such a coward for punting that. Game over."

"Dabo Swinney is such a coward"

"Dabo is a coward. Clemson is cooked."

"that’s a clown punt by Dabo … go for it bruh"

    "Elite surrender punt from Dabo"

With the new 12-team College Football Playoffs format, the Tigers can still contend for a national championship even with a loss to Georgia. In the past, a loss certainly could have eliminated a team's title hopes.

Clemson will look to bounce back in Week 2 against Appalachian State.
