After scoring just six points in the first half and being the laughing stock of Week 1, Iowa silenced the doubters after a monster eruption in the second half against Illinois State .

With head coach Kirk Ferentz serving his one-game suspension, the first half was a train wreck, yet the offense responded.

At the half, the Hawkeyes led 6-0. The defense still looking as good as advertised, but after hiring new offensive coordinator Tim Lester , the expectations were that the offense would be improved and much more dynamic.

After setting the internet ablaze in the first half, Iowa made some clear second-half adjustments, and erupted for 34 points in the final 30 minutes, including 21 points in the 4th quarter. All of which were offensive touchdowns.

Quarterback Cade McNamara ended 21-31 with 251 passing yards and three touchdowns. Running back Kaleb Johnson rushed 11 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Including a 64-yard touchdown. The 462 total yards that the Hawkeyes racked up Saturday was the most in program history over the last five seasons.

After throwing just three touchdowns to wide receivers all of last season, Iowa completed three touchdowns to wide receivers in Saturday's Week 1 matchup.

The Hawkeyes are starting off on the right note with a 40-0 victory, and if they keep the offense progressing in the right direction, with McNamara leading the way, they could be a force in the Big Ten.
