Rams News: Rams Eye Major Offensive Shift: Jackson Moving to Center

The Los Angeles Rams are considering a significant shift in their offensive line by moving Jonah Jackson to the center position. Head coach Sean McVay is reportedly leaning towards this change as the team prepares for the upcoming season.

Jackson, who joined the Rams on a three-year, $51 million contract after four seasons with the Detroit Lions, has primarily played as a guard throughout his career. Although he has limited experience at center, with just 24 snaps in that role, the Rams are looking to optimize their offensive line by placing their best players on the field together. Both starting guards, Kevin Dotson and Steve Avila, are returning, making this move feasible.

Avila, who played center during his college career at TCU, spent last season as a guard. With Coleman Shelton now with the Bears, Avila's versatility will be crucial for the Rams' offensive strategy. The team is hopeful that Avila can transition smoothly back to center, especially given his previous experience.

In addition to the offensive line adjustments, McVay has announced that running back Kyren Williams will take on the role of punt returner this season. Williams had a standout year last season, accumulating 1,350 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns in just 12 games. His new responsibilities on special teams may indicate a decrease in his offensive touches, particularly with the addition of Blake Corum to the roster.

“Guys with worse records than me have gotten second chances, but I don’t see it happening because of my age,” Zimmer – who sports a .562 winning percentage – said. “And now teams also want whoever can coach the quarterback. It is what it is.”

The Rams have finalized their 53-man roster, with Cobie Durant set to back up the outside cornerbacks. Defensive back Quentin Lake is expected to start in a versatile role, adapting to different defensive packages as needed.

As the Rams gear up for the season, these changes reflect their strategy to enhance their performance and adapt to the evolving dynamics of their roster.
