BREAKING: Could Week 1 Eagles vs. Packers be Canceled Due to Wildfires in Brazil?

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to travel to Sau Paulo, Brazil to play the Green Bay Packers next Friday for the first ever game in South America. That plan is now up in the air, however, as wildfires have ravaged the area, resulting in poor air quality.

Over 30 nearby cities are battling the wildfires, and there is word that the NFL may have to cancel this game for the safety for all involved.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva noted that these fires were likely started by criminals and are raging out of control due to serious drought conditions in the region.

Brasilia’s Environmental Institute has reported that the drop in air quality is so low that the current levels are considered to be very unhealthy, making it a real possibility that this game could be moved back to the United States.

The Eagles were scheduled to be the home team in this game, so moving it back to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia makes sense if this game cannot be played as scheduled.

Certainly, local authorities and NFL brass are watching this situation very carefully. It is also likely that both teams will have a fair amount to say about this situation in the coming days.

The game is still currently scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6 with kickoff at 8:20 p.m. EDT.
