The Philadelphia Phillies (80-56) got everything they needed and then some from their ace on Saturday night, earning a victory over the Atlanta Braves (74-62) 3-0.

    Wheeler's Night

Zack Wheeler (13-6, 2.63 ERA) twirled a gem on Saturday night, improving his National League Cy Young case, and earning his 100th career win.

It took Wheeler a couple of innings to settle in, with control being an issue early and the strikeout stuff not being there for the veteran, but he pitched four 1-2-3 innings over his seven-inning outing.

Wheeler threw 96 pitches on Saturday, generating 13 whiffs and 11 called strikes for a 25 CSW. Of his 96 pitches, only 42 were in the zone, but Wheeler allowed no walks in his seven innings and struck out seven showing just how strong of a pitcher he is.

The cutter and splitter were not there for the ace tonight, so he laid off them giving him only four options of his six, but would lean heavily on his fastball throwing it 36 times. It generated five of his 13 whiffs.

Wheeler has pitched to a 0.95 ERA against the Braves this season across 19 innings in three starts with 20 strikeouts.

    Notables

    • Alec Bohm did not start again tonight due to left-hand soreness. It is unclear at this time if he will be in the lineup tomorrow.
    • The Phillies have now won 31 consecutive games in which their starting pitchers have gone seven innings.
    • The Phillies completed their 14th shutout victory of the season, the most in MLB.
    • Trea Turner hit a home run in the sixth inning, his 15th of the season and first since August 18th.

    WPA Leader of the Game

Saturday's WPA leader of the game was none other than Wheeler. Wheeler pitched seven innings of shutout ball on four hits and no walks while striking out seven.

Wheeler's WPA score finished at 42.9.

Next up for the Phillies is the finale of this fantastic four-game weekend series on Sunday. The first pitch for Sunday's game is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Phillies fans can listen to the game on 94 WIP or WTTM 1680.
