Fans Share Heated Response To Mike Elko's Baffling Decision In Texas A&M's Week 1 Loss

Mike Elko and the Texas A&M Aggies just lost a stunner in College Station. No. 20 Texas A&M fell to the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 23-13.

The Aggies found themselves down 20-13 with just over 1:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. Texas A&M was on their own 33-yard line when they dealt with the difficult task of having to complete a fourth and two sets.

Elko had the Aggies lined up in the shotgun with just two yards on fourth down. Notre Dame had two linebackers up in the box, spying on the Aggies running back since they anticipated a handoff or dump to Le'Veon Moss.

The Fighting Irish decided to rush six players while having their safeties play back on the sideline to monitor any passes to the wideouts.

Notre Dame read the play in perfect fashion and took over the field position, which led to a field goal and the ball game.

The Irish simply didn't overreact to the six offensive linemen set by the Aggies, which usually means a run play throughout the tackles.

Their defensive back deflected the pass by quarterback Conner Weigman through on an attempted cross route, and the Irish attained possession.

Following the loss in Mike Elko's first game with the program, the head coach received tremendous backlash online, given the team's decision to pass the ball on fourth and short.

"Yeah, I don’t know how Mike Elko planned to get into the end zone with those play calls on that drive." said one fan.

"Elko looking confused like it's 4&16." commented another fan.

"Elko in the fourth quarter, what could go wrong. Ha. Good riddance," mentioned another fan.

"Fire mike Elko. Hire urban Meyer," said another fan.

"We deserved a better hire than Elko," commented another.

"Mike Elko needs to be benched immediately." said one fan.

Elko's offense with the Aggies was struggling throughout the entire night in College Station. Fans believe Texas A&M was disorganized and inconsistent, not just in their actions on the field but their play calling as well.

The Aggies quarterback, Conner Weigman, finished the game with 100 passing yards, throwing for two interceptions, and zero touchdowns.

Weigman had a 40 completion percentage, with just 12 of his 30 attempts being brought down for the catch.

The Aggies' offense simply looked flat, so putting full trust in a quarterback who was clearly struggling to find his receivers in leading gaps in pressured scenarios was questionable.

Nevertheless, the Aggies will look to put this game behind them and bounce back in Week 2 against McNeese State. They'll be hosting the Cowboys at 12:45 p.m. ET.
