Will Rodgers Take Brady’s Sack Record?

    2024-09-01

As the NFL season begins, NFL icon and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer s quarterback Tom Brady may see one of his records broken by New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers — though it's a record that neither quarterback would be proud to hold.

Entering his 20th season, Rodgers is poised to surpass Brady’s all-time mark for the most career sacks in NFL history.

Brady, who spent 20 seasons with the New England Patriots before finishing his career with the Buccaneers, retired after the 2022 season with 565 sacks. Now, Rodgers sits at 531 sacks and needs just 35 more to eclipse Brady's total. Based on his career average of 2.29 sacks per game, Rodgers could break this record if he plays through the entire 2024 season.

Rodgers, who was protected by relatively solid offensive lines during his time in Green Bay, will now rely on a revamped Jets line. Despite upgrades in the offseason, including the acquisition of Tyron Smith and the drafting of left tackle Olu Fashanu , questions remain regarding the line's health and cohesion. Last season, the Jets' offensive line surrendered 64 sacks, a troubling figure for Rodgers as he hopes to avoid breaking Brady's unwanted record.

While Rodgers’ head-to-head record against Brady stands at 2-3 in the regular season and 0-1 in the playoffs, his overall career stats highlight the rivalry. Brady holds the edge in total passing yards (89,214 to 59,055), touchdowns (649 to 475), and championships (7 to 1), although Rodgers leads in passer rating (103.6 to 97.2) and has thrown fewer interceptions (105 to 212).

For Buccaneers fans, the impending mark serves as a testament to Brady's resilience and longevity, especially during his time in Tampa Bay, which included leading the team to a Super Bowl LV victory. Brady's career is defined not only by his unparalleled success but also by his ability to endure and perform under pressure, even as sacks accumulated over two decades.

As Rodgers takes the field for the Jets this season, the focus will be on whether he can avoid surpassing a record that highlights a quarterback's resilience in a less favorable light. Can Rodgers steer clear of this unfortunate milestone, or will he find himself at the top of a list that Brady certainly doesn't miss?
